Big Breakfast tastes the
Wonder of Enid
Whitby Gazette March 19th,1999.
WHITBY’S very own female Elvis Presley impersonator has become a national
TV star.
Appearing on The Big Breakfast last week, Enid Butler, of Rigg View,
Stainsacre, dressed as Elvis and sang "The Wonder Of You".
The adventure began when the Channel 4 breakfast show advertised for
Elvis impersonators and a friend put Enid’s name forward to appear.
She sent off photographs of herself dressed in an Elvis costume, and
last Monday, TV bosses rang Enid and told her to jump on the next train
to London so she could appear on the show the next morning.
During her interview with host Johnny Vaughan, Enid told the nation
about the time when a girl in a pub said she was going to chat up ‘Elvis'
- until she realised the singer’s real identity.
Enid said: “That was a real back-handed compliment. I fool a lot of
people because I don’t have Elvis’s black hair”. “I met Johnny Vaughan
and Kelly Brook and they gave me a wonderful English breakfast. The hotel
where my husband and I stayed overlooked the Canary Wharf, and was fit
for a king.”
Elvis is really a woman
by STEVE LUMLEY ( The Daily Star 29th June,1999)
"Well blessah my soul". This Elvis impersonator has fans All Shook
Up because the King is a woman.
But Enid Butler is so convincing that there are no Suspicious Minds
about her gender.
Married Enid, 46, says: “Before I go on as Elvis I go to great lengths
to get the voice and mannerisms just right so my act is as good as it gets.”
“But now I find myself talking like Elvis to friends — and even behaving
like him.”
“After shows quite a few people ask for Elvis and others want my autograph.
It’s fantastic.”
“And now everyone knows who I am — when I go shopping I get at least
one person singing ‘Love Me Tender’.”
Enid, from Whitby, North Yorks, admits: “I was never a huge fan of
Elvis until I heard "Now or Never" when I was 16 and then I was hooked.
Until then I was a big Cliff Richard fan.”
She first appeared as Elvis 20 years ago and now sings full-time in
pubs and clubs around the North-East.
Her husband Ken says: “The shows go down an absolute storm and she
is a very popular performer — I can’t believe just how well things are
taking off.” The 5ft 1" frock n’ roller has spent over £200 for each
of the two jump suits she uses in her show.
Enid says: “I’ll go anywhere to perform my Elvis tribute act and I’m
never happier than when I’ve got my jump suit on. If only I could stop
picking up his traits when I’m out-of-character. As far as I know I’m the
only female Elvis impersonator in Britain.”
Playing Elvis was “Always on my mind”
Michelle Davies, Evening Gazette, 20th October, 1999.
The Elvis impersonator was a huge hit.
One group of women were particularly taken with the performer’s smooth,
sexy tones - and with a nudge and a wink decided there was no way he was
going to be Lonesome Tonight.
The hip thrusting, gyrating and knee-trembling reached a crescendo
and one woman turned to another, yelling above the music: “Ooooh, when
he gets off that stage I’m going to rub his face in my chest.” Luckily
they didn’t hear the sniggers from the man sitting behind.
But when ‘Elvis’ came off stage and planted a big kiss on his lips
they must have done a double take.
No Elvis isn’t gay - he’s a woman. And he’s alive and well and living
with his husband, Ken, in Whitby.
Enid Butler is the North-east’s very own, and probably the one and
only, female Elvis Presley impersonator.
Known as ‘Uncle Elvis’ to her nephews and nieces, the petite 46-year-old
lives an amazing double life.
In her wardrobe at home alongside the dresses you’ll find a white,
jewel-encrusted jumpsuit and other outrageous costumes. And on her dressing
table, where most women might have make-up, is a black wig and furry sideburns.
Once she gets the garb on she looks spectacular - and from a distance,
it’s not surprising she’s been ogled by female fans. “I suppose it’s a
compliment,” laughs Enid. “If a bit of a backhanded one! Ken always comes
with me and he thinks it’s hilarious when that happens!”
It was just a one-off but it began to prey on her mind during her job
as quality control worker at a local dairy. “I would sit there among the
bottles of milk dreaming of the day I could be Elvis on stage all the time,”
she says. Eventually Enid decided to give it a go.
“They used to take the mickey a lot at work. I could hear them down
the end of the yogurt run singing ‘Uhhuh-huh’.”
“But the first time they saw me perform their eyes nearly popped out.”
Enid had to pack in work at the dairy because of illness. But she jokes
that her health problem may occasionally improve her performance. “I’ve
had problems with my left knee and it starts to go sometimes. If you see
it shaking though I’m not dancing - it’s arthritis.” It takes Enid just
a few minutes to get Elvised up. And although you may not exactly want
to rub her face in your chest - as she struts her stuff you can’t help
but tell her she looks fantastic. Slipping the huge shades down her nose
and raising one black eyebrow, she winks:
“Thankyouvermuch...
There's a Woman Down In Whitby Swears She's ELVIS!
by Louise Smith, Yorkshire Evening Post, 28 Sep 2000
ELVIS PRESLEY will always be remembered as the King of Rock and Roll.
But it was the queen of impersonators who wowed the audience and won an
international contest in Ontario, Canada.
Enid Butler, from Stainsacre, near Whitby, donned her Teddy Boy wig
and belted out her rendition of “It’s Now or Never” to an amazed crowd
who threw flowers on stage as she fought off competition from 45 male impersonators
to win the ‘Spirit of Elvis’ award.
Enid and her husband Ken flew out to the festival when organisers invited
them after seeing her on the internet. She said:
“I never do competitions normally, but I thought ‘Let’s just do it’.”
Enid, 47, was turned away from the school choir twice for not being
able to sing a note but she won the hearts of the crowd in Canada were
she was voted the one who sounded and looked most like Elvis.
“One Canadian even wrote a song about me called No-one Sings a Song
Quite Like You Do,” said Enid.
“I really couldn’t believe it. It was the first thing I’ve ever won
in my life and we were treated like royalty out there.
“I’ve always been a bit of a clown and I started doing impersonations
about 30 years ago. I used to do Cliff Richard, Frank Spencer and Prince
Charles. I’d do them anywhere - at parties or in the supermarket.”
Seven years ago Enid was invited to star in a 60s night at the Spa
Theatre in Whitby. She appeared on stage as Elvis and has since continued
to emulate him.
The ex-dairy quality controller is amazed by the reaction to her act.
She said: “I have a fan club which was set up in London, have appeared
on television and will feature in a new American book about Elvis impersonators
called The Hall of Kings.”
She added: “Elvis left us a legacy which will never be matched &
we should keep it going.”
ENID'S THE KING!
The Weekly News, October 7th 2000.
There are endless Elvis impersonators, but the closest you’ll get to
The King is, in fact, more accurately, The Queen. For the best of them
all is a woman.
That doesn’t stop Enid Butler from curling her lip, wiggling her hips
and making the ladies scream for more!
Enid was voted Britain’s number one Elvis impersonator by ‘This Morning’
viewers, and she has
just returned from a Canadian Elvis festival, where she beat off 45
men to receive the Spirit of Elvis award — the most coveted trophy in the
competition.
“I haven’t always been an Elvis fan,” said 47-year-old Enid, from Whitby.
“In my youth I’d much rather listen to Cliff Richard but one day, I
heard the Elvis song, ‘It’s Now Or Never’, and I was hooked.”
“I started Impersonating Elvis about 25 years ago, but it was only
a bit of fun. Seven years ago, family and friends started suggesting that
I do it seriously.
“I concentrate on the Vegas years, singing such as ‘Burning Love’ and
‘Can’t Stop Loving You’.
“I’ve got three jumpsuits, a wig and glasses that I wear for every
show that I do.
“I can’t do the dance routines though, I’m too old for that now, plus
I’ve got two left feet!
“My family and friends are very supportive.
“My husband, Ken, comes everywhere with me, and my nephews and nieces
all call me Aunty Elvis!
“I would love to be an Elvis Impersonator full time, but the right
offer has yet to come along.
